A recent update documented the highest rates of global MDR TB in 2009 and 2010 (9). Our experience reported here underscores the need to be constantly mindful of this infectious disease threat in our increasingly borderless world, even in countries where incidence of MDR TB is low.

Spatial relationship between Taenia solium tapeworm carriers and necropsy cyst burden in pigs
BACKGROUND Taenia solium, a parasite that affects humans and pigs, is the leading cause of preventable epilepsy in the developing world. Geographic hotspots of pigs testing positive for serologic markers of T. solium exposure have been observed surrounding the locations of human tapeworm carriers. This clustered pattern of seropositivity in endemic areas formed the basis for geographically targ...

متن کاملPacific Broad Tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus as a Causative Agent of Globally Reemerging Diphyllobothriosis
The Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum) is the causative agent of the third most common fish-borne cestodosis among humans. Although most of the nearly 1,000 cases among humans have been reported in South America (Peru, Chile, and Ecuador), cases recently imported to Europe demonstrate the potential for spread of this tapeworm throughout the world as...
متن کاملThymus dependence of tapeworm (Hymenolepis diminuta) elimination from mice.
Although normal mice eliminated the lumen-dwelling intestinal cestode Hymenolepis diminuta by day 21 post-cysticercoid inoculation, congenitally thymus-deficient (nude) mice maintained their work burdens. Nude mice grafted with thymus glands or injected with thymus cells eliminated their worms.

• In a second study, prevalence of tapeworm infection in 157 horses was randomly evaluated at necropsy during a 12-month period. Anoplocephala perfoliata was identified in 27% of the horses, exceeding what fecal testing would indicate in many herds. Horses <2 years of age, perhaps due to immunologic susceptibility, were at greater risk of tapeworm infection than adult horses. The geometric mean...
